Trygve Skaflestad

Trygve Skaflestad was born in 1921 in Flora, a fishing village on the North Sea in Norway. As an eight-year-old, he immigrated to America and when World War II began he joined the Navy. He has a Purple Heart and a Presidential Unit Citation for the invasion of Normandy and served in the Pacific as well. He enjoyed a career as a New York City Harbor Master, particularly at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where as captain of the Hayward vessel, he and his crew would assess and rectify hazardous navigational situations such as sinking boats, collapsed piers, and crashed helicopters and small planes. He is predeceased by his wife Evelyn Kyvik Skaflestad and survived by his sons, Peter Skaflestad and his wife, Sharon, of Stuart, FL, and Clyde Skaflestad of Kunkletown, PA; his daughter, Elizabeth Skaflestad and her husband, Ray Krueger of New York City; his grandchildren, Jason Skaflestad; Kirsten Harrington and her husband, Adam; Ashley Flynn-Corbin and her husband, Tyler, Peter Skaflestad Jr. and his wife Cathreene; and his great-grandchildren, Kaitlan and Christian Skaflestad and Scarlett, Kaelan and Desmond Harrington, Chloe Flynn-Corbin and Ava Joy Skaflestad. Visiting will be Friday 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home 2482 Church Rd., Toms River. Funeral services will begin at 4:00pm at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.
