Phillip Guadagno 76 of Toms River passed away January 16, 2022 at the Concord Healthcare And Rehabilitation Center, Lakewood, NJ. Phil was born on Staten Island, NY on March 25, 1945 to Augusto and Giulia (née Marro) Guadagno. He was raised in Charleston and Rossville and attended Tottenville High School. He grew up trapping, hunting, fishing, clamming, boating and developed an interest in history, folklore and archaeology. One of his favorite pastimes was searching for fossils, artifacts and arrowheads on the South Shore of Staten Island. Two days after his 17th birthday he enlisted in the United States Navy, trained as a boiler technician and was deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a plank owner of the USS Albany which cruised the Atlantic, Mediterranean and West Indies. He was honorably discharged in 1965 with the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He worked for General Cable Corp before becoming a NYS Corrections Officer. After retiring from NYS in 1986 he worked a number of private sector security jobs. He last worked for Department Of Defense as a police officer on the military bases of Ft Wadsworth in Staten Island and Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. One of his favorite duties was Reveille each morning during which he fired a cannon to signal the start of the day. After moving to Toms River in 2007 he took up golf. He enjoyed the sport and became an accomplished golfer and achieved 2 hole in ones. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Diane (née) Ambrosini, a daughter Cindy (Jason) Guadagno-Grodsky, a son Matthew Guadagno, a beloved niece Rhonda Guadagno-Franey, a brother Robert Guadagno, and by many much loved nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor and quick retorts. Silverton Memorial Funeral Home 2482 Church Rd., Toms River is in charge of a private cremation. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or JBJ Soul Kitchen.
