Monroe D. Kurtz

Monroe Donald Kurtz aged 88, departed this life on Monday, April 18, 2022, in Brick, New Jersey. Born in Newark, New Jersey on August 18, 1933 to the late Louis and Florence Kurtz, Monroe was predeceased by his sister Claire and his brother Franklin. Monroe graduated from Weequahic High School and Upsala College. Monroe was a 1952 Newark A.C. golden glove champion which launched his professional career. He was a popular Jewish boxer whose many matches were televised on the old Newark Channel 13 from Laurel Garden and Meadowbrook Bowl in Newark and fought at such venues as Madison Square Garden. His boxing career was put on hold when Monroe joined the Army in 1953 serving his country for two years consisting of a tour of duty in Germany. Monroe taught at Bergen Street School for 13 years and was employed for 20 years at the Copeland Companies as a financial advisor for 403b and 457b plans for public employees prior to retiring. He loved taking long walks on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk. Monroe is survived by his wife of 51 years, Josephine and his two sons, Lawrence and his wife Irina and Aaron and his wife Emily, three grandchildren he loved dearly, Quinn, Louis and Walter as well as his extended family. Family and friends are invited to celebrate and remember the life of Monroe on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home at 2482 Church Road, Toms River, NJ 08753. A service will follow immediately at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to charity that would honor his legacy. The family thanks the CCU and Hospice staff at Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center in Bricktown.
