Elaine T. Gabel

June 16, 1935 - April 15, 2022

Elaine T. Gabel (nee Gusz) passed away at the age of 86 on Friday, April 15, 2022 in Brick, NJ. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Elaine was born in Mt. Vernon, NY in 1935 to Thelma (nee Beisinger) and Michael Gusz whose ancestors came to America from Germany and Hungary. She was interested in ballet, tap, and dance as a child and dreamed of being a Radio City Music Hall Rockette, but was too short! She grew up in a very close-knit neighborhood in Mt. Vernon, surrounded by many friends and family. After moving to Oakland, NJ in 1967 to raise her family, she thrived at being a loving mother, homemaker, and worked at Toshiba, Russ Berrie, and Scott Foresman where she developed lifelong friends. In 2001, she moved to Brick, NJ and worked at the Ocean County Library until she retired in 2014. She liked to spend time shopping and decorating her beautiful home which was a source of comfort and solace to her. She loved reading spiritual devotions, playing cards and Mahjong, crossword puzzles, ice cream, and red wine (but always with an ice cube)! She especially loved going to the beach, playing skeeball, and strolling on the Jersey Shore boardwalks. She looked forward to vacationing with family in the Outer Banks, Maine, California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Boston, and with her sister and her family in New Hampshire. Elaine was happiest spending time with her beloved family and dear friends, for whom her love, concern, and support always remained her highest priority. She was very proud of her three grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Although she was presented with a series of difficult challenges in her life, she always met them with grace, dignity, and grit, while maintaining her sense of humor. Her strength and resilience belied her diminutive stature and mild-mannered ways. She found peace and inspiration, especially during difficult times, as a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Manchester. Elaine is survived by her three children, daughter Patricia Tanis (husband Leonard); son Richard Gabel (wife Wendy); daughter Elaine Buttacavoli (husband Robert); her three grandchildren, Lauren, Brian, and Kaitlyn Tanis; sister Barbara Monahan (husband Joseph); and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2482 Church Road, Toms River, NJ on Sunday, April 24, between 1:00 and 5:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 25 at the funeral home at 11:00 AM. Arrive at the funeral home at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River, NJ.
