Alice Ann Plosica (Bass)
November 14, 1932 - December 28, 2021
Alice Ann Plosica (Bass) was called to heaven on December 28, 2021, peacefully at home, surrounded by her two loving children. Her 89 years on earth was a life of service and commitment to her family, friends, church and community. She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Raymond Plosica (in 1983), as well as her second husband, Paul John Bass (2019), her parents Frank and Anna Salkauskas, and her three brothers. Alice is survived by her two children: a daughter, Lauren Ann Fancera of Spring Lake, NJ and a son, Michael Robert Plosica (wife) of Monmouth Beach, NJ. She also leaves behind five amazing granddaughters: Taylor Anne, Nicole Alyce and Emily Katelyn Fancera - Morgan Elizabeth and Riley Grace Plosica. Born Alexandria Ann Salkauskas on November 14, 1932, in Kearny, NJ, “Alice” was the youngest of four children born to Frank and Anna Salkauskas, and the only daughter. She graduated from Kearny High School in 1950 before beginning a career at Prudential Insurance (Newark, NJ). Alice was married to Robert Plosica on May 26, 1963 and worked at Prudential until giving birth to her daughter Lauren. She briefly lived in Allentown, PA, where her son Michael was born. With the love of the Jersey Shore she moved back to New Jersey to West Point Island, Lavallette, NJ in 1968, setting up the roots which would support them for the next 53 years. From 1968 to 1983, Alice and Robert embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, building and operating the Sandy Shores Motel. The motel was a tourist favorite, and Alice was a hands-on owner, teaching her “patented hospital corners” bed making and cleaning standards to dozens of young employees, many found it difficult to pass Alice’s “white glove test.” Alice was an amazing seamstress who had a passion for sewing, crafting and making her own clothes, costumes, and draperies. While in her late teens and early 20s, Alice made a dress a week and always had something new to wear on Saturday night. A dynamo in the kitchen… family and friends sought out her perfect apple pie… she lived by the phrase “you always need dessert!”… and made sure her kids always had a “4-course” lunchbox. She spoke Lithuanian and was proud of her Lithuanian heritage, by sharing her love of traditional food and customs with her children and granddaughters. Besides being a spectacular homemaker and business owner, Alice was active, all her life, in her church and community, culminating in her being elected to the Lavallette Town Council from the years of 1996-1998. A devout Catholic, Alice was a part of Saint Catherine’s Church (Seaside Park, NJ). She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America; Rosary Alter Society; Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, Toms River NJ; Lavallette First Aid Woman’s Auxiliary; West Point Island Civic Association; Lavallette Yacht Club and the Lithuanian Clubs of Whiting and Kearny, NJ. There wasn’t an organization she belonged to that she wasn’t always extremely active or president of for many years, earning her Catholic Daughters Woman of the Year twice. She gave of herself and her talents to anyone in need. She enjoyed leading fundraising efforts by throwing Ethnic Nights and Bunco Parties for the church and KofC. The family gives a special thanks to Halya Kruchok, for her incredible loving care. The family will be celebrating her life on Wednesday, January 5th, 2022 with a viewing followed by a Mass of Christian Burial and Alice will be interred after beside her husband, Robert, at Holy Cross Cemetery, in North Arlington, NJ. In lieu of flowers they ask that donations, in her honor, be made to Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital.
